Guo Da Li is one of the emphasized customs associated with the Chinese Weddings. However, it is not as complicated and difficult as over the years the elements of the traditional Chinese wedding ceremony undergone changes and have been simplified.

Before I begin, please note that it is always advisable to always respect and seek your parents and in law’s advice rather than follow what I’m going to share below, so please treat this as a sharing guide.

What is Guo Da Li 过大礼?

Guo Dai Li is prepared and given by the groom’s family. It epitomizes the groom’s sincerity of the marriage between the bindings of two families. It is a day which both the groom and bride exchange gifts and cash. It also assure the bride’s family that she will be well taken care of after the marriage, so what happen is, both parties’ parents will discuss and pick and finalized a date for Guo Da Li. Usually the chosen date is 1-4 weeks before the wedding day for the gifts exchange.
To shows the groom’s financial dependability and sincerity, the groom will brings gifts and cash to the bride’s home during the Guo Da Li. The bride’s family will then accept and return aka 回礼 the remaining cash to the groom to avoid giving the impression that they are “selling” their daughter.

Okay, so the tricky part here is what are the lists of items to buy as notable that we have customs unique to Hokkien, Teochew and Cantonese dialects.

GETTING READY for your Pre Wedding Photoshoot

► Plan your outfits: What goes with what indoor backdrop or outdoor scenery. You don’t want to end up wearing a green gown at the greenery field, don’t you?
► Back up plan: Have an alternative date or choose indoor photo shoot location in case of bad weather. Communicate with your photographer.
► Props: If you have many props set up at certain scene, always communicate with your photographer or helper as more time are needed for the setup.
► Pose List: Instead of listening to your photographer on what pose to do. Save your own pose list in the mobile phone so you will not run out of idea what to pose. Show the pose list or practice it with your spouse if you can so both are well prepared. See pose list here.
► Preferred location: Communicate with your photographer and driver so they know where is the next photography destination. Your photographer needs to get the right camera equipment ready for the next scene!

WHAT TO BRING

► Men’s Shirts: Bring at least 3 different colours shirt to match bride’s gown.
► 2 Ties: To match the bride’s gown.
► Black & white socks(Long): For black and white men suits photoshoot.
► Nude underwear: When the men needs to wear white suits.
► Button shirt: Easier for the bride to change into the wedding gown after the makeup and hair is done.
► Slipper: Beside the heels, bring a comfort shoe or slipper as you need to walk a lot for outdoor photoshoot.
► Facial blotter: Facial blotter paper to blot the oil without ruining your makeup.
► Tissue and wet tissue: In case you perspire etc.
► Water Bottle & Straw: To keep yourself hydrated. Drink with the straw so as not to ruin your lipstick.
► False eyelashes: If you have your favourite false lashes, bring it along. Otherwise, use what the makeup artist is providing.
► Ampoules: Same thing, if you have your favourite ampoules, bring it. Otherwise, use what the makeup artist is recommending.
► Plasters: In case of bad blister from wearing the high heels.
► Portable mini fans: In case of hot weather, the mini fan will prevent your makeup from melting. I recommend using micro USB mini fans which can be plug into the phone straight away which cost S$5-$10 each. Pretty strong wind unlike those battery operated mini fan you get from Diaso. 
► Sweets and Snacks: In case you get hungry along the way.
► Safety pins: In case the zip is not working etc.
► NuBra: Optional.. to lift or enhance your boobs!
► Hairspray: Bring your own hairspray if you don’t have a makeup artist that follows you. Strong wind will ruin your hair and you will realized that hairspray is your savoir.
► Mini make up pouch: If you don’t have a makeup artist that follows you through the day, you will need to bring your own compact powder, blusher, eyelashes glue, lipstick.
► Umbrella: In case of bad weather
► Props: If you want to… Balloons, chalkboard, flower etc.
► Hair Conditioner: (A Must) Your makeup artist will be using alot of hair spray. By using the hair conditioner before shampooing your hair will makes washing a lot easier as it helps to dissolve the hairspray first.
► Eye makeup remover & Cotton pads: To remove your false lashes and eyelashes.

DIY Wedding money box aka Ang Pow Box doesn’t have to be hard. If you are creative and is really good at handicraft, making your own Ang Pow Box can be really enjoyable.

Here’s 7 Ang Pow Box ideas I have gathered online through my research which I think is pretty awesome and creative. The Chinese people call this as Wedding Ang Pow Box wheres in the western country, they call it as the Wedding Money Box.

Want to see the wedding ANG POW BOX I DIY ?

Unicorn Wedding Ang Pow Box- DIY by Me!
 

This was the wedding Ang Pow box I made during my wedding in 2011.

With the idea along unicorn and fairytale, I decided to DIY my own ANG POW box with some bling bling crystals and pastel colour has to be used.

I’m not going into details how I DIY the Ang Pow Box as I think is pretty straight forward… except for the unicorn which I actually google online to find the best looking unicorn shape, print the shape out, trace the shape with a pencil on the box and start pasting the swaroski crystals with a special glue meant for swaroski crystals so they will not peel off easily.

ITEMS required

BOX: I bought the box from Precious Thots Tampines, just so you know that most Precious Thots carries boxes like this in varies sizes. I like their boxes as they comes in varies colours, textures and sizes. Of course you can use any box but you need to buy some wrapping paper or cloth to wrap them up which is a bit tedious.
Other places you can get the box from are Spotlight, Artfriend, Daiso (Pretty small boxes unless you want to make tier type like the wedding cake) or you can also use recycling boxes like A4 paper carton box.

SWAROSKI CRYSTALS: Purchase from a shop near Arab street. I couldn’t remember the shop name though.

Glue (Depends on what you are pasting), double side sticky tape, scissors, penknife, pencils, ruler, colour paper, nice wrapping paper, ribbons, flower etc… are what you basically need.

Some advice if you plan to DIY your ANG POW BOX

TIPS 1: Use BIGGER box or 2 boxes:
Looking back, I should have buy the bigger box, I regretted buying the medium size box as the box is too small for the guest to put the red packet. My dear brother in law had to empty the ang pow box 2-3 times and kept them separately in another bag so the rest of the guest coming in later can slot in the ang pow.
I’m not sure how many guest are you inviting but my recommended Ang Pow box for holding 300 guests is to use at least 2 cartons of 30 x 25 x 22cm (A4 paper size carton box): His & Hers.

TIPS 2: A BIGGER Deposit Slot:
The Ang Pow these days comes in varies sizes and I only buffer extra 2-3cm of an average red packet, so the deposit slot I cut is too small, in the end, the guest have a little difficulties to slot in the Ang Pow. If you ask me the recommended deposit slot size to cut, I would recommend making a 14 by 2.5cm ang pow slot.

TIPS 3: Accessorize it:
Simple is beautiful, but looking back at the unicorn Ang Pow box I had DIY, I find it a little too plain and I realized that I should place some flower at the top of the box to beautify it even more. I think you will agree that too.
Most of the exquisite Ang Pow box I’ve seen online have some artificial flower or ornaments at the top on the Ang Pow box, so it is a better idea to design drastically rather than keeping it too simple.
