They will calculate by using 26 Nov and count to today’s date to check how many weeks pregnant are you. Actually, the most accurate way is to use ovulation date to calculate but not many women know when they ovulate unless they are like me who uses the ovulation kit to find out their LH surge.

So I found this LPD & Ovulation calculator online to calculate how many weeks I am. This is crucial for me since I have longer cycle date. After entering both LMP & my ovulation date, the results are about 1 week different.
My LPD shows 9 Weeks 6 days and my OD shows 9 weeks (on 2 Feb 2017 as I write this post.)

That being say, even that I should not be 2 weeks off smaller. It should be 1 week smaller if my gynae was to calculate by using my LPD. So I started to feel uneasy again.

Second Opinion About My Pregnancy

1 week later, on 18 Jan 2017, Wednesday, I went for my second check up. This time, I went for a second opinion at Thomson Medical center by Dr Beh. He knows about my previous miscarriage as he is the one who helped me terminate my previous pregnancy. So I’m pretty sure he will be more careful in terms of checking and giving me a better consultation. I told him about my ovulation date since I used ovulation kit for this pregnancy and he counted that I should be 6 weeks 5 days. But the ultrasound shows that my CRL is 2.66mm which is the size of a 5 weeks 6 days fetus.

CRL is Crown Rump length. It is the measurement between the top of the head to the area above where the legs begin. You can find the CRL length written on your ultrasound image handed to you by your gynae.

As you can see from the chart. I should be 6 weeks 5 days pregnant and the fetus should measure 9mm but I am only now measuring 5 weeks 6 days and 2.66mm only. It’s too way off the chart!! And Dr Beh indeed say is pretty small. The gestational sac only grew from 1.1cm to 1.3cm since last week. Dr Beh try to see if we can hear the heartbeat and I was amazed that the fetus heartbeat can already be detected and heard. That makes me a little comfort and with hope. Again I was given Proluton injection to promote the growth of the fetus and he ask me to carry my daily Utrogestan capsule. He ask me to see him next week again but somehow I was already mentally prepared.

Small Gestational Sac, Slow Fetus Growth but Strong Heartbeat

25 Jan 2017, Wednesday: Being able to still see the flicker on the ultrasound is really comforting. The fetus heartbeat is stronger than last week at 120bpm. However, Dr Beh told me that the fetus growth is very slow. From last week, 5 weeks 6 days, CRL 2.66mm to 6 weeks 2 days, CRL 5.25mm only. Meaning for a week, the fetus grow 3 days and not 1 week. What’s more is Dr Beh also realized that my gestational sac is pretty small. I did not really question more as I’m unsure what to ask. He said we will just try hard since the fetus still have a strong heart beat.

I’m not sure about the others but I know every time before I start my period, about 4-7 days before my period, I will have these really weird noise from my uterus. They are not from the stomach as they are not those gas which makes you feels like you are going to fart. They are really those rumbling and gurgling sound from the Uterus. So on 28 Jan midnight, the sound makes me woke up and I was so scared because they only happened few days before my period. Since I am currently pregnant, why will there be such noise from my uterus??? I woke up and goggle again. After a little bit of research, I found out that many women are experiencing the same thing as me, you can read more here. So that makes me feels assured and I went back to sleep shortly after that.

For the next few days, the pain on my breast subsided and more pimples are popping out on my face and back. I have this really bad feeling and somehow I told myself to be mentally prepared.

The heartbeat stopped: My Second Miscarriage

1 Feb 2017, Wednesday. Today I was accompanied by my hubby, somehow I dragged him along as I have this really bad feeling. Indeed, the flicker on the screen(heartbeat) I’ve seen for the past 2 weeks is gone. Dr Beh checked multiple times and said it’s not with us anymore. Although the fetus size shows 7 weeks and increase in size but it’s no longer with us.

Feeling upset, Dr Beh provide us with 2 options: Natural miscarriage or like the previous time, terminate it for us. He also mentioned that since this is the second time I miscarriage, he say I may wish to choose to send the fetus sample for lab test to check if there is any abnormality after the termination had been done. This test would allow us to find out the underlying cause and may prevent future miscarriage to happen, but is optional. Some couple wish to know and some couple doesn’t. The costs is about $700-$900 but I’m just in a blank state of mind now. I mean, why did this happened again??

What went wrong? =(

So this time round, I hope I can increase the chances of conceiving a baby boy, and this is why I decided to do some research and gather some advice from my friends prior to ahem you know.
Although there is no medical evidence that any of them will work and some may say it’s old wives’ tales, but there’s no harm trying it right?

Don’t be mistaken, I don’t have a preference over a baby boy. I’m just hoping for a balance yin (feminine) and yang (masculine) in the family. Who knows we might need this little masculine help when me and my partner grows old and weak?

So here’s what I have gathered prior to trying to conceive for a baby boy. If you plan to conceive a baby boy, you might find this useful.

Know your Eggs and Sperms Characteristics!

Before you try any tips or method you have seen or heard, it’s important to know the characteristics of your eggs and sperms.

Your egg can only survives no more than 24 hours after you’ve ovulated.

If fertilization does not occur the egg dissolves after 24 hours. At this time your hormone levels will decrease.

Sperms can survive inside the female body for up to 5 days.

There are 2 types of sperm: X is girl and Y is Boy. They actually determine the gender of your baby.

Male Sperm (Y) is smaller and swim faster but it is weaker and dies faster in the female body.

Female Sperm (X) swim slower but live longer in the female body.

Male Sperm (Y) usually lives 1 to 1.5 days during your fertile period.

Here’s 8 Tips to Conceive for a Baby Boy

Tips 1: It’s all bout the timing!

By knowing the eggs and sperms characteristics, you will be able to plan how to make Male Sperm (Y) to meet the egg first. The Shettles Method suggest that you should do the deed 1 day before or actual day of your ovulation date. If you have sex several days before your ovulation, then the male sperm may die off which will leave more female sperm to fertilize on the egg. This method has a higher success rate of 75% at conceiving a baby boy.

Tips 2: A Deeper Penetration

That’s not the end yet, Dr Shettles suggest that a deeper penetration near to the cervix will help increase the chance of conceiving a baby boy. Because male sperm can swim and reach the eggs faster than female sperm. Besides, this helps shorten the distance to travel to the eggs as male sperm dies faster. So get the position right and get him to ejaculate deeper inside when he is ahem!

Tips 3: Alkaline Foods Diet for Boy

It is said that sperms will dies off easier in an acidic conditions and they survive longer in a alkaline conditions. Thus, it is recommended to start a pre-conception diet for women aiming for a baby boy a week before they try to make love. To do so, make sure your intake of pre-conception diet should be higher in sodium and potassium and lesser in calcium and magnesium.

You want to make sure your body PH level is towards the alkaline side, so that you can preserved the male sperm to live longer as they can only live 1-1.5 days.

Here what you should eat and avoid.

Tips 4: The Female Orgasms for a Baby Boy

According to The Shettles Method, it is suggested that a woman planning to conceive a boy should have an orgasms first. The secretion produce has a alkaline PH levels in the vagina and this is more favorable to the male sperm as this helps them to finish the line, moving the sperm closer to the cervix.

        })();

Tips 5: Men to keep themselves Cool

It is said that a hot bath will kill off both the male and the female sperms but the weaker and smaller sperm (male sperm) will be killed first. Thus, it is suggest to ask your partner to have a cold bath instead to support the male sperm. Also, get your partner to wear boxer shorts and loose fitting pants.

Tips 6: Keep the Sperms Count High

As male sperm is weaker than female sperm, it is suggest to keep your partner sperm count high. This can be done by avoiding sex 1-2 weeks before your ovulation as you want to save the day to do the deed on the ovulation day. The higher the sperm count will mean more male sperm swimming to the egg first.

Tips 7: Know your Ovulation Date

There are a few ways to find out your ovulation period but finding out your actual ovulation date is a science. On average, a woman’s cycle is normally between 28-32 days. To calculate your ovulation period, you will need to use the 1st day of the last menstrual period (LMP) or by calculating 12-16 days from the next expected period. If your average menstrual cycle is 28 days, you ovulate around day 14 and that is the peak- that is your actual day of your ovulation.

Remember an egg is only available to be fertilized for about 12-24 hours, but you may still be fertile for up to 5-7 days.
Let’s take a look at the illustration below so you know where I am coming from. The illustration will explains everything.

However, this is most accurate and useful if you are trying to conceive with no gender preferences. But, do bear in mind that the 5-7 days ovulation windows is important to test your LH surge to conceive a boy. I have explain more at Tips 8.

Tips 8: Relations between LH surge and ovulation

Near your ovulation windows, your brain will send a signal called LH surge to the ovary to indicate that your egg matured. This is when your estrogen level increase and the brain release a kind of hormone to the ovary which causes the egg to thin and escape and this is when your ovulation period will start to takes effect.

By knowing this, you can check when your LH surge will occur by using an ovulation predictor kit. The Clearblue Digital Ovulation Test claimed over 99% accuracy in pinpointing your 2 most fertile days. The test works by detecting the increase LH surge in your urine. The LH surge occurs approcimately 24-36 hours prior to the release of an egg from your ovaries – a process known as ovulation. You are most fertile the day before and on the day your LH surge is detected.

Your 2 most fertile days begin from the time that Clearblue Digital Ovulation Test detects your LH surge, this means you can increase your chances of conceiving a baby boy once your LH surge is detected!

Don’t judge by their website. I think they are doing some website maintenance so it’s a little confusing and messy now. Gobi wons many awards and appear in a few media. They call it the jewel box! Nice name yah? Delicately crafted with chocolate petites which allows you to personalized your message up to 30 characters. They have freshly handmade macaroons to choose. Comes in 2 to 12 pcs per box depending on your budget.

HOSPITAL BAG CHECKLIST SINGAPORE MUM-TO-BE

I would recommend all mothers-to-be to pack your hospital bag 1.5 months prior to your due date and here’s why!

About 3 years ago, I delivered to my daughter who is about 4 weeks prior to my due date. My water bag broke in the middle of the night and yeah! I have to grab my hospital bag and rush to the hospital. Perhaps I was a little paranoid after watching I didn’t know I was pregnant from discovery health channel. Though I know I am pregnant but anything can happen and it may happen anytime, and I don’t wish to face the panicked and worrying on the day of my delivery.

I’m glad I did my advanced hospital bag packing and so please pack your hospital bag in advanced.

If you have no idea what to pack for your hospital bag, here’s a hospital bag checklist I have compiled for mummy who is delivering in Singapore.

Yes, I survive during the physical and mentally torture from the 2 weeks wait and the waiting game is no fun! You can read more here in my previous blog post if you are wondering why I have chosen for natural miscarriage instead of D&C surgery.

Prior to the 2 weeks wait, I have already made an appointment to see my gynae in preparation for D&C, in case my natural miscarriage failed.
I don’t want to wait too long for the natural miscarriage to happen as I have read online that some can drag to 1 month or more for it to happen. Moreover, having to deliver a baby which is more than 10 weeks is a lot more traumatizing and painful. I couldn’t imagine delivering the baby and the placenta out as most of them mentioned that it is a lot more painful!

The day I had my surgery- 16 March 2016

The day has come and I was nervously praying for the 1% miracle. I was a little hungry and weak since I started fasting last night at 9 pm (I was advice to go fasting 4 hours before the surgery). But that’s alright as I just need to endure the hunger for probably half a day.

I was alone for my appointment at 9 am (Busy hubby was at work) and I waited close to an hour to see my gynae, Dr Beh Suan Tiong at Thomson Medical Center. I didn’t place a lot of hope because just 3-4 days before the appointment, my nausea symptoms have greatly reduced and I no longer felt as tired.

Sure enough, my last ultrasound scan shows no heartbeat and the fetus has shrink. I am already prepared to be arranged for the D&C surgery when my eye saw the lifeless fetus on the tv screen again. A little dishearten but not as sad when I first received the news 2 weeks back.

Dr Beh was very caring and professional. He explained to me about the procedure I have to underwent in the noon. With relieved, he told me that the procedure is suction type, also known as vacuum aspiration which is commonly used to terminate 1st trimester pregnancy; abortion or as a therapeutic procedure after miscarriage.

I felt less frighten because it means no scraping or scooping is needed using a curette (a spoon shaped instrument)!
And the procedure itself typically takes less than 15 minutes. Horray!

What is D&C?
D&C (Dilation and curettage) is a surgical procedure in which the cervix is dilated (expanded) so that the uterine lining (endometrium) can be scraped with a curette to remove part of the lining of the uterus and contents.

What is suction aspiration?
Vacuum or suction aspiration uses a long plastic tube connected to a suction device, insert into the uterus to suction out the fetus and placenta. The rate of infection is lower than any other surgical abortion procedure at 0.5%.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-8290153947427081" data-ad-slot="3346601656" data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

The reason why it was recommended is because it is safer, I’m still in trimester 1, I’m still young and I want to bear a child in the future again.Mistakenly, I don’t have to go for D&C which I thought I need to. The research and forum shared by other mothers had made me terrify for nothing.

So I made my way out and made the necessary arrangement with the nurse. They arranged the surgery to be done at the day surgery ward, Thomson Medical Center at 1.30pm. The cost is $2,600 which $900 is Medishield claimable for all Singaporean.

At around 11am, the nurse came to me with 2 pills and a glass of water. She explained to me that the 2 pills which I have to take orally will help to ripen my cervix and I will start to feel cramp and bleeding in 1-2 hour time. She also handed me a sanitary pad to be wore after taking the pill. Shortly after that, she passed me the admission letter and I made my way down to level 1 counter to register myself for admission.

“Whoa! My first time admitting to the hospital by myself” I thought and feeling really weird.
After the registration and $1000 deposit payment, I was told to follow another staff to the day surgery ward.
At this time, I can start to feel the cramps coming but the pain is bearable, I rate 3/10. I’m not sure about the rest but my pain threshold is quite high.

Upon arrival at the day surgery ward, I handed the document given to me at the counter to the nurse. She made me felt as ease with a warm smile and greeting, ask about my name, help me put on the hospital name tag on my wrist and show me to my bed. I looked around the room as I follow her to my bed. It was pretty quiet and the lights are quite dimmed which is good for resting. Most of the curtains are drawn up at each bed except mine, pretty relaxing I thought.

Next, she brief me the whole process, ask me to change into the surgery gown, cap and socks and told me that someone will bring me to the surgery ward when the surgery time is near. Before she left my bed, she also ask me to choose between tuna or egg sandwich which will be given to me after the surgery. The thoughts of food is making me even famished.

I was told to take a rest as I have 1.5 hours more prior to the surgery timing which means I can take my time to change to the surgery gown.
After she left, I draw up the curtain for more privacy. I text my husband the surgery ward number and make myself relax on the bed. But shortly after I loosen up abit, I felt the urge to poo!

WHAO! Am I that relax? OMG…

My tummy hurts! “Do I really have to do this now?” I thought to myself.
What happen if my butt hole still smells even after cleaning up my butt hole?
If I don’t poo now, will I poo while I’m on anaesthetic during the surgery later?

Okay, don’t laugh can….
I mean, I feel that it is endurable but what if I poo while I’m being knock out after the anaesthetic?
I’m not quite sure….
All sorts of scenarios came to my mind and I wondered why is this happening now!

After some thoughts… I decided to make myself to the toilet which is like 8 steps away from me, just next to the nurse counter.

I mean it is better to save myself from an embarrassment for having a smelly and a little trace of poo at the butt hole than pooing during the surgery later on.

Agree?

Going to the toilet? The nurse asked.
“Yes”, and I give back an awkward smile.
Where else then! I thought!

Finally, after the job is done. I try my best to clean it with the toilet paper a few times and re-assure myself that it was clean enough by doing the last step- wiping my butt hole with the wet wipes.

Right, I was in there for too long and just after I zip up my pants, the nurse knock the door and asked me if I’m okay.

“Yes, I’m alright”. Quickly, I wash my hands, unlock the door and let myself out. I look at her and gave an awkwardly smile to her again and return to my bed to relax.
Phew!

Selfie of myself relaxing in my ward.

IN THE SURGERY ROOM

At about 1 pm, I change myself to the surgery gown and wore my cap. Another nurse came in to my ward, check my name and push me to the nearby lift. I have no idea where she’s bringing me, all I can remember was staring at the ceiling as I lie on the bed.

Next thing I knew was she had push me to another waiting ward and a nurse came and attend to me. She ask if I have any drug allergy, when is my last meal taken and check with me who is my doctor, what’s my name and identification number.

I waited for about 10 mins when the anesthesia doctor and my doctor, Dr Beh arrived. He explained to me about the procedure again and reassure me that I will be fine.

Then, I was being push in to the surgery room. You know the 3 big operation light where you have seen in the movies before? Yes, I start to become a little nervous as everything become so serious when I saw the 3 big operation lights and being surrounded by the doctors and nurses. *I totally forget about my poo accident.

Soon, the anesthesia doctor came to me, hold my left wrist and ask me to do a few clutches to find my veins. The veins appeared soon after that and Ouch! The anesthesia injection is pretty painful! I must say. Subsequently, the nurse help me put on an oxygen mask and I start to wonder if I’m will be black out soon.

Do I black out by sniffing through the mask or through the injection? I’m confused. Oh dear… why am I still awake? I wondered as I try to sniff more thinking that probably I didn’t sniff enough. I tried and tried and next thing I recall is I’m given another anesthesia on my wrist again. Ouch!… thereafter, the oxygen mask I’ve been sniffing smells differently and next thing is I felt groggy, it happened so fast that I black out after that!

BACK TO DAY SURGERY WARD

The surgery took about 15mins, and 30mins later, someone woke me up. I felt groggy still, not knowing where am I and close my eyes back to sleep.

When I’m fully awake, my body is already back in the ward. The nurse came to me, ask if I’m feeling okay, measure my blood pressure and tell me that the surgery is done and told me that they have wore a loose pad for me as I will be bleeding. Then, she draw up the curtain for me so I can rest more.

Then, I text my husband that I’m back to the ward.

HOW I FEEL AFTER THE SURGERY

So how do I feel after the surgery? I felt at ease, everything is finally over, the physical and mentally pain I have went through. I felt extremely relieved and surprisingly there’s no cramp and any pain at all. It’s not as bad as what I thought it will be. But the hunger is kicking in and I know I shouldn’t be eating anything straight after the surgery, so I waited.

The room is quiet again though there’s a few conversation but at a minimum sound. 30mins later, the nurse came in to check on me again, asking if I ready to eat.

“Yes, please” then she placed the tray on my table and I wondered if that was enough for me.

Here’s my teabreak at 3.15pm. 2 slices of tuna bread and hot milo!

Surprisingly, this is quite filling. I took a rest for a while and 15 minutes later, I went to the toilet to change back to my home clothes and ask the nurse if it’s okay for me to discharge.

No no dear, you need to rest for 1 more hour and wait for Dr Beh to check on you again. You’re not ready to go yet.
But I feel really fine, I thought to myself. Having no choice, I went back to my ward and rest.

My hubby came shortly after that, we chatted and giggle and Dr Beh arrive soon after that. He ask a couple of question and told me to go back 2 weeks later for a review and left.

Finally, I’m ready to discharge and we make our way out to settle the payment and left.
I’m so glad that everything turns out fine and I must say that the nurses and doctor at Thomson Medical are really friendly and caring. The service I experience at the registration counter, the nurses at the day surgery ward and the doctors who did the surgery for me are making me really feel at ease.

Now it’s time I can look forward to go back to work and move on!

Today was the 2nd day after receiving confirmation from a 2nd opinion that my baby indeed has no heartbeat and chance of survival. I am feeling much better as compared to the first day when I got to learn about it and accepting the fact, though I am hoping for the 1% miracle to happen.

I chose to discuss about it because my hearts goes to anyone who had gone through this or is going through this right now. It’s kind of physically and mentality torture I must say when you really want the baby.

2 MARCH 2016, WEDNESDAY
It was my 2nd check up and just like any other mothers, looking forward to this day to see their baby growth.

However, my happiness was cut short.

I knew something was not right the moment I had my ultrasound scan, with the screen right in front of me. The baby is sitting comfortably in the amniotic fluid and though I can see that the fetus is growing but it looks lifeless.

I know something was not right because this is my 2nd pregnancy, it doesn’t move and it does not have any flickering on the chest!

I was actually looking forward to seeing something flickering because there was no heartbeat during the 1st check up. And this week, the fetus should be 8-10 weeks!
*Just so you know that a fetus heart beat can be detected and heard after 6 weeks and there wasn’t any during my 1st check up.

I didn’t think a lot about it since my gynae Dr Phua Soo Mear from Kovan said that I should be 7 weeks but the fetus is measuring about 5 weeks during the 1st check up (2 weeks ago).

I was right!
*Feeling devastating

He started to shake his head a little and then he broke the news to me.

“The baby still doesn’t have any heartbeat, hmmm…” he said, and he continue and tried every angles to see whether the fetus is playing hide and seek. “It’s not a good sign, it should have a heartbeat by now”, he said.

To re-confirm his diagnosis, he also did a vaginal scan for me. And there is the fetus, still laying lifeless in the amniotic fluid.

“Well, I can arrange you to Thomson to check again” he said.

“What do you mean? What’s the different checking here and at Thomson Medical Center?” I asked.

“For a 2nd opinion, my dear” he said.

I was still hoping that this is a misdiagnosis, probably my cycle wasn’t right and my ovulation was delay so there is some sort of miscalculation. Maybe the baby was 5-6 weeks. For a piece of mind, I decided to arrange myself a check up the next following day.

I couldn’t sleep… and I was praying. Nevertheless, I start my research online to prepare myself what’s really going on, will that be a misdiagnosis?
I chance upon this 2 website, which gave me some hope.

www.misdiagnosedmiscarriage.com/mycommunity
www.pregnancy.lovetoknow.com/pregnancy-problems/tilted-uterus-ultrasound

After the research, I was hoping that probably my uterus is retroverted because I recalled that I had it after giving birth to my first child. That gave me some hope, thinking that probably this is why the heartbeat is undetected. (You can read more from the link above)

And I try not to think too much about it, maybe there will be a good news tomorrow.

3 MARCH 2016, THURSDAY

I arrived Thomson Medical Center at 8.50am and finally at 9.50am, I get to see gynae Dr Beh Suan Tiong.

I explained to him what’s going on and then he did the ultrasound scan for me.

Then, he said: “Yes, there’s no life.” and there’s nothing they can do.

Feeling rather disappointed, lost and devastated, I asked so now what?

What am I suppose to do with the fetus in my womb?

Then, Dr Beh starts to explain…

1. Dilation & Curettage (D&C):
A procedure in which the cervix of the uterus is expanded (dilated) so that the uterine lining (endometrium) can be removed with a spoon-shaped instrument called a curet orcurette.

2. Natural Miscarriage:
This is pretty obvious, it means letting nature to take its course for cramping or bleeding to start.

He ask me to think about it and should I require any D&C, just call up and make the appointment.

My first thought was to go natural miscarriage because I am still waiting for the 1% miracle to happen. I mean who knows… I have been going through all these for nearly 1.5 months, so probably giving myself another 2 weeks to see what will happen next?

Yes, many must have opted to go D&C. Instead of the long torturing wait, worrying that the womb is not clean when it heal or the infection risk they may have to go through, they decided to go for D&C.

But the 1% strong will of miracle is what I decided to wait for another 2 weeks.

Yeah.. many things are still running through my mind, I thought to myself is it because of the wine I drink during Chinese New Year reunion dinner (Back then, I still don’t know that I’m pregnant), was it because I carry Kate at times or was it because of the viral eye infection that had causes me to feel very sick for nearly 1.5 weeks during the period 7-18 Feb.

Did the chilling, feeling restless, weakness, tiredness, nauseous and bad appetite tired me out and did the virus pass to the fetus.

I remember staying on bed for nearly a week and I couldn’t really move. It’s really very bad and I thought I am going to die.

Nevertheless, I am still hoping for that 1% miracle to happen or otherwise natural miscarriage for the next 2 weeks.
I will keep you peeps update again!
